Meridan Plains was named after an early pastoral property established in 1870. It was named using a corruption of a Kabi language word which means place of kangaroos and dingoes.
Meridan State College is a well-known school in the area. it first opened in 2006 as a primary school then later expanded to high school as well. In 2017, the school had an enrolment of approximately 2,711 students and 194 teachers. It also has a special education program.
Meridan Plains is a locality on the edge of the Caloundra urban area. It is only eight kilometres west of Caloundra CBD. Starting off as a rural area, the locality is attracting residential development from the expansion of Caloundra. Meridan has a population of almost 4,000 people.
